WHAT KINDS OF INSULIN PUMPS ARE AVAILABLE TODAY?
00:09 - So I think if you could sort of split pumps into durable pumps and patch pumps, the durable pumps have got tubes and that sort of thing and are less discreet, whereas the patch pumps I think are much more modern devices. One particular one, of course, is the Cellnovo pump which gives the addition of technology for pumping which is quite different to traditional pumps and also has benefits of continual readouts. It can be available both for patients and for their healthcare professionals. But I think this is quite a major advance in giving real-time data because it gives a much more immediate feedback to patients as to what their treatment is doing and what their response to treatment is doing.
WHAT IS THE IMPORTANCE OF SAFETY FEATURES IN INSULIN PUMP TECHNOLOGY?
00:55 – So I think there is an issue at the moment with pumps in general in that safety features of pumps are not as transparent as one would like them to be, and I think the regulatory environment for pumps is going to change. And I think the fact that the Cellnovo system has got continual monitoring, not only of patient’s blood glucose but also of the effectiveness of the system itself is really quite novel and exciting. So the systems are able to detect problems and relate those real-time to the patients, so the patients can act so as to maintain their own safety. And I think that’s a vital sort of element to the technology that will have to be embraced by all companies that produce pumps.
